Coleman Deliberato: In Japan, education is compulsory at the elementary and lower secondary levels. Virtually all students progress to the upper secondary level, which is voluntary. Most students attend public schools through the lower secondary level, but private education is popular at the upper secondary and university levels. The law stipulates compulsory education for 9 years at least (6 years of primary and 3 years of junior secondary). Education is free at primary and secondary level in state and government schools. However boarding fees, uniform fees and textbooks have to be paid for. Many students go to private schools from primary level up to university. There are also federal ! and state universities funded by the government....Show more
