Why do we have to bail out car manufacturers who make SUVs and Large trucks?

Olin Hallin: We shouldn't be responsible for the companies~However, if the taxpayers do bail them out. ..we should demand CEO salary caps, stocks in the company and the companies produce electric and/or eco-friendly vehicles only. Personally, I think the gas companies should bail them out since the car company are making vehicles that continue to pad their pockets. Also, I think the government should take the money that they would use on bail outs to back small businesses that would make eco-friendly vehicles. You know ~ back the little guy instead of greedy CEOs who were thrilled making tons of money on their hummers and suv's....Show more

James Langmyer: They also make small cars that get very good gas mileage. Ford is bringing its European version of the Fiesta to the US in 2010 and it gets 60 mpg. They also employ millions of people, and work with hundreds of other companies who also employ millions of more people. Trucks are necessary in many cases as they h! ave a much greater utility than tiny cars.

Tyree Allenbrand: The domestic auto makers were guilty of neglecting their passenger car divisions while producing large quantities of SUVs and trucks, but people have quickly forgotten the fact that they did not produce these trucks for no reason but people bought these vehicles in large quantities. Trucks brought in massive profits and were in huge demand, it wasn't that long ago that GM was raking in the money selling trucks at ten thousand dollars of profit per unit. To put that in perspective Toyota makes less than a thousand dollars profit per unit on Corollas. But back to your question, I love the domestic auto makers but I do not believe we should bail them out. Congress would better use their influence by removing CAFE requirements that make automakers meet difficult fuel economy standards, and reducing unnecessary restrictions and legislation that hinders our domestic auto makers....Show more

Burt Cheevers: Bec! ause we (well not all of us) wanted what they were making! They! can not make the product you want with out investing in retooling and resizing at a cost you can afford! If you think that it is bad to be dependent on foreign oil, how much worse would it be if we had no car makers in the US.Talk about black mail.So in short we need to bail them out for at least national defense reasons.Could we have won WWII with out the GP? Maybe, but with out the US automakers, what will we do next time? I can see it now, we go to war against Russia and can't even make a motor cycle let alone a car, or tank, or airplane. Why, because we abandoned the ones that could make them when they needed help!...Show more

Derrick Smsith: The are holding the US Government ransom, hence refused to be competitive against othersNo bailout, no military vehicles for US Army (US has to unconditionally surrender to anyone they are fighting now)

Edmund Rappley: Because its much more than that. Don't forget that if the company shuts down, then so do the dealershi! ps. Most dealerships in my area have about 10-20 Salesmen, 2 Finance Managers, 2-5 receptionists per department, multiple janitors, car washers, porters, and lets not even get started in the service department. Multiply this by the total number of dealerships each Manufacturer has in each states, THAT IS A LOT OF PEOPLE MOST LIKELY TO LOSE THEIR JOBS!Next, the manufacturing plants that each company has to build cars, and the many people at each plant per manufacturer. Thats an estimated 900,000 people. Jobs in my area are already scarce so add to that the 10 Ford Motor company dealerships (Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo), 4 Chrysler Dealerships (Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge), and 10 GM dealerships (Chevy, Pontiac, Saab, Cadillac, Gmc, Saturn, Buick, Hummer, and i think i'm missing one) within an 8 mile range.Next are the parts suppliers that lose demand, so next they decrease their supply. Then they're money goes down and they are expected to start firing employees also. Als! o people such as the ASC (American Sunroof Coperation) lose money by lo! sing out on many Sunroof's and convertible tops that mostly GM has them to build. Also the (unbeknowst to me) people that sell the companies the plastics, leathers, metals, and rubbers among other materials. They all lose money.I see this as a chest shot to the already fragile economy. The unemployment rate only grows and the difficult to obtain jobs have just become about impossible... I think the tax payers, including myself, money should pay for this to not only keep the available jobs, but this money will get the cars that many people want. More Hybrids, more clean diesels, and even fuel cell vehicles. The reason that we still have the 14mpg SUV's is because people do buy them. They sold many diesel and hybrid SUVs, including the 22mpg City, 21mpg Highway Chevy Tahoe Hybrid. Sure 22/21 doesn't sound impressive, but that is almost excellent for those 5,000lbs beasts that are shaped like bricks. There have been many more, but many people overlooked them.Sure they make so! me unefficient vehicles, but I know for sure that Gm has the most vehicles (17) with more than 30 mpg. I'm more than sure that if people did not crave horse power and actually bought the smaller engines the companies sold, we wouldn't be complaning about it would we. They are trying to make money like everyone else and just sold their products. Don't blame the companies that make the 14mpg vehicles, blame the people that bought them and made them popular. If more people just wrote letters to the manufacturers explaining what they wanted, I'm pretty sure we would have gotten it. Thats why we have these 300hp "family" sedans. Also, thats why we have these many small fuel efficient cats thanks to the recent $4.10 gasoline. People wanted better mpg and they provided. In my opinion, this bailout makes much more sense to me than the dumb bailout of fanny and freddy....Show more

Sheron Perrez: Yup. i'm surprised too. hardly do you spot human beings in super SUVs or automobil! es hauling around a team of youngsters or shipment. it somewhat is freq! uently one guy or woman and an in any different case empty SUV. even while there are passengers, it somewhat is basically no greater suitable than 4 human beings. Any compact sedan ought to hold that. nonetheless, once you think of roughly it, gas, as a proportion of folk's income, somewhat isn't almost as much because it was once interior the 70s. Our earning have outpaced the fee of potential (long term) sufficient so as that we are able to arise with the money for those short term spikes....Show more
